Long time administrator and educators honored at final home game of the year.
After a combined 104 years of service to USD 483, long-time administrator Mark Webb and coaches Jack Johnson and Barry Mellen will retire at the conclusion of this school year. All three were recognized on Thursday, February 27, during the final home basketball game of the season. Mark Webb served 20 years as the athletic director and 15 years as the SWH junior high prinicpal. Prior to his administrative duties, Mr. Webb coached boys and girls basketball, boys and girls tennis, and football for a combined 26 years. He also taught high school social studies after previously teaching at Ingalls, KS, for five years. Jack Johnson served all 39 years at USD 483 where he coached high school and junior high football for 21 years, high school and junior high boys basketball for 19 years and golf for all 39 years. Mr. Johnson also taught both junior high and grade school physical education and junior high social studies. Barry Mellen has coached and taught for 34 years, of which 29 have been at USD 483, after moving to Plains from Dighton, KS. He has taught business education and video production; coached high school volleyball for 10 years; and, girls basketball for 33 years. All three of these men have dedicated themselves to serving students and athletes throughout their tenure. "They've touched so many lives in more ways than anyone can imagine," commented Sherry Sutherland, a former player of Coach Mellen. Congratulations, Mr. Webb, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Mellen on your retirement and thank you for dedicating more than ten decades of service to the students of USD 483.
