*Crystal Torres, Candace Scruggs, Steffany Tabb, Diana Newman, Ramon Sanchez, Ricardo Landa, Adviser Cindi Herbig and Robert Herbig attended the 2009 National Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN.  They were among more than 5,300 nationwide members, advisers, alumni, and guests of FCCLA.

This year's student-devised subject for the annual national meeting was "Beyond the Label," and throughout the five-day convention, participants examined and discussed several critical issues.

Candace Scruggs, Crystal Torres, Steffany Tabb, Ricardo Landa, and Ramon Sanchez competed in National STAR events.  Candace, Crystal and Steffany were national runners-up for their presentation on Children and Nutrition.  Ramon and Ricardo also received national runners-up honors in their category of Chapter Showcase Display.  All five students received a national gold medal.  We are very proud of these students for their outstanding accomplishments.

Diana Newman represented Kansas by participating as a voting delegate.  Her duties included listening to speeches, going over resumes and deciding, with a Kansas group of five voting delegates, which delegate would best represent Kansas in the upcoming year.

Southwestern Heights will continue to work with other FCCLA members and advisers in Kansas to encourage others to discover their strengths, motivate members to target career goals, and initiate a plan to ignite youth leadership in their community.
